Convertible rule.

So how come convertibles aren't allowed to ice race? Seems like it would be pretty hard to flip a car on ice as it would just spin. Also, SVR allows convertibles to compete in Autocross events. I'm just curious as I'd like to ice race my Miata but I don't want to spend a grand on a hardtop to do so.

Different rules and different insurance. Ice runs are actually a rallycross, not a solo because they are not run on pavement. Rallycross rules (and insurance) require hard tops to be installed (also includes removable panels).

Even on ice, you can flip a car. Many times the course has to be plowed, leaving a burm of snow along the entire circuit. Those can cause serious damage and possibly a roll over if hit correctly.
